In most of the Indian kitchens, baffle or mesh filters are used in the chimneys. Baffle filters must be cleaned in two to three weeks for better life. Baffle filters can be cleaned with a help of mild detergent and warm water to remove the greasy residue. Mesh filters have tiny pores that absorb the smoke so there is probability of small particulates blocking the pores. Mesh filters should be cleaned in eight to ten days. Before cleaning the filters, soak them in warm water for some time to release the dirt.

Mild detergent and hot water are not always enough to clean baffle filters. So, you can use caustic soda or sodium hydroxide to clear these filters. But this method could be dangerous as the chemical is highly corrosive and it’s flames are harmful. Use gloves and other protective clothing while handling such chemicals.

To Clean the filter, remove it and put it in a glass or metal tray and keep the tray under the tap in your bathroom. Sprinkle some caustic soda to cover the filter and pour boiling water on it. Do this from a distance and don’t inhale the fumes. Now, leave it for one hour or so. After this, open the tap and let the water overflow. But stay away from the overflowing water. Once enough amount of water has gone, you will find the baffle filter sparkling clean

Charcoal filters cannot be cleaned and therefore need to be changed in every four to five months

Duct tape chimneys must be cleaned with a soap scrub at least once in a month. They are easy to maintain in comparison to baffle filters or mesh filters.
